Waste collection


Members of Marine Care Association collect as a group about 3,000,000 tonnes of waste every year.

The MARPOL Convention 73/78 and the Ballast Water Convention define which waste categories have to be discharged at ports and how. Today there are 7 categories:

Oily waste

(Marpol I)

Annex I

From the engine room of ships, residues from fuel tanks and rinsing water from mineral oil/fuel cargo residues

Noxious liquid substances in bulk

(Marpol II)

Annex II

Wastewater contaminated with noxious liquid chemicals from the rinsing and cleaning of cargo tanks containing liquid chemicals

Harmful substances carried by sea in packaged form

(Marpol III)

Annex III

Harmful substances (identified as marine pollutants) carried by sea in packaged form

Sewage from ships

(Marpol IV)

Annex IV

From shower drains, lavatory spaces, galley spaces, urine, feces, and flushwater (allowed in some areas)

Garbage from ships

(Marpol V)

Annex V

From all kinds of food, domestic and operational waste, all plastics etc. (optional)

Air pollution

(Marpol VI)

Annex VI

Wastewater from scrubber installations on seagoing ships (ozone depleting substances and exhaust gas cleaning residues)

Ballast water

To protect again invasives species taken in one area and rejected in another one. Due to the huge quantities, ships have usually onboard management systems. PRF operate is special circumstances.
