Port reception facilities help prevent pollution. According to the international maritime legislation, the most important ports have to provide adequate port reception facilities to allow commercial vessels to discharge their waste without causing undue delay.
“Adequate” means capable of receiving the types and quantities of prescribed wastes from ships normally using the port taking into account the operational needs of the users of the port, its size and geographical location, the types of ships calling there.
